So how do you stop a “Mass Casualty Event?”

In the media lately there has been a lot of focus on “mass shootings” and the like. Just recently, here in the Houston area, we had a “mass stabbing.” So how would you prevent, or at the very least limit the amount of human suffering and loss that happens at these events.

  • Gun Free Zone

One thing that could be done is to make certain sensitive areas “Gun Free Zones” right? Let’s look at that. Someone is intent on performing a criminal act. They plan on using a firearm to inflict serious and most likely lethal injuries to any number of people, from one individual, to as many as they can until they are stopped. The problem is, gun free zones do not work. Below is a short list of some events that occurred in a “gun free zone”

Sandy Hook Elementary shooting Newtown, Connecticut
Sikh temple shooting Oak Creek, Wisconsin
Aurora theater shooting Aurora, Colorado
Fort Hood massacre Fort Hood, Texas
Kirkwood City Council shooting Kirkwood, Missouri
Virginia Tech massacre Blacksburg, Virginia
Amish school shooting Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
Red Lake massacre Red Lake, Minnesota
Wedgwood Baptist Church shooting Fort Worth, Texas
Columbine High School massacre Littleton, Colorado
Thurston High School shooting Springfield, Oregon
Westside Middle School killings Jonesboro, Arkansas
Air Force base shooting Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington
Lindhurst High School shooting Olivehurst, California
University of Iowa shooting Iowa City, Iowa
Luby’s massacre Killeen, Texas
Stockton schoolyard shooting Stockton, California
Dallas nightclub shooting Dallas, Texas

So, “gun free zones” don’t magically prevent firearms from functioning or appearing. There is no “emancipation grille” to vaporize any firearm that enters into a “gun free zone.” So that idea obviously won’t work. Let’s try something else.

    • Ban on Military Style Rifles or Modern Sporting Rifles (Assault Weapons)

So let’s ban the type of evil black rifle that is most commonly used in these disasters. Surely that would do it, right? There won’t be any more mass shootings if we make owning evil black rifles illegal.

Except the ones listed below.

  • Extended Background Checks

Let’s try making it illegal to own a firearm in general, that will surely do the trick! Below is a list of incidents that occurred with a firearm that was illegally in possession of an individual, either because the person is legally restricted from owning a firearm, or the firearm was stolen from someone else.

Well dammit. That didn’t work either! Starting to get the idea?  So how do we actually stop these problems? Well, how were the ones I listed stopped?

Below is a list of incidents where is has been confirmed, to the best of my limited resources, that the event was halted by some kind of armed intervention.

Police arrived on the scene, and the person committing the crime was confronted with an armed presence and a threat of lethal force. Once confronted, they give up and either surrender, or commit suicide. In most cases, it is the latter.

Wait, meet force with force? That couldn’t possibly work to prevent these kinds of tragedies! We should leave it to the police! Except it did work.

Guy with permit to carry concealed stops potential mass casualty event.

So, bad guy wants to shoot up a bunch of people at a mall. Successfully shoots two. Good guy points gun at bad guy. Bad guy doesn’t continue to threaten people, but goes and commits suicide instead. Incident resolved.  I should point out, that the good guy here wasn’t a Police Officer, either on or off duty. He was an ordinary citizen. He was prepared and chose not to be a victim. He stopped it. This is one example of thousands of stories that you never hear about how someone with a firearm, prevented a tragedy from happening. It is nearly impossible to keep track of how many times a firearm was used to prevent a crime, because it was used to actually prevent the crime from happening. It’s not a big news story

So how do you prevent the mass casualty events that occur? Simple. You take away the gun free zone. Allow citizens to arm themselves for the protection of themselves and their fellow citizens. You probably don’t know it, but depending on where you call home, you may have inadvertently made contact with someone who was armed at the time. You also need to change your perception of those people who are armed.  We aren’t all Dirty Harry wannabes. I sincerely hope that I never, ever, am faced with the decision to unholster my pistol to defend myself or those around me.  That doesn’t mean that I won’t, I just don’t want to.

And this article only accounts for what I am calling a mass casualty event. It does not include those incidences and circumstances where there would only be one or two victims that could have been prevented if one of them was armed, or those where one of the potential victims was armed and successfully protected themselves, their loved ones, or their fellow human beings.

You should be grateful to Police Officers for what they do. You should be even more grateful for your armed fellow citizens, since in all reality, they are the true first responders to a mass casualty event.

For reference, I gathered the above lists from the link below, and filled in what gaps I could with wikipedia entries. (I will not create an active link to the motherjones site however.)
